ACHILLES TENDONITIS
Muscles are connected to bones by rope-like structures called tendons. When a muscle contracts it pulls its tendon, which in turn pulls on the bone it is attached to and thus results in joint movement. However when too much tension is placed on a tendon or the tendon is subjected to trauma such as a knock the tendon may become inflamed. This is called Tendonitis. Tendons are slow to heal as they don’t have as good a blood supply as, for example, muscles. Treatment of tendonitis usually consists of rest and physiotherapy. If the conditions persists or is severe it may be necessary to reduce the tension on the affected tendon with strapping, lifts or orthoses. Common tendonitis that your Podiatrist may help with are Achilles Tendonitis, Tibilialis Anterior/Posterior tendonitis and Peroneal Longus Tendonitis.
