Ingrown Toenails

INGROWN TOENAILS
Ingrown toenails can be treated easily in Achilles Foot Clinic. If treated early enough this can consist of a simple clearing out of the side of the nail. If the problem is chronic or is badly infected surgery can be performed This does not need to be a traumatic experience and can be performed in this clinic under local anaesthetic. You will be able to return home immediately after the procedure and return to walking, work and normal activities the next day and sports in a week or so.

The surgery is a minor procedure and will be performed in the clinic, usually not lasting longer than one hour. There is no need to fast before the procedure. Two local anaesthetic injections will be administered to each toe to be operated on. These should not be painful but you will experience an initial pinprick from each injection. The numbness normally takes 10-15 min’s to take the effect and will the toe will remain numb for between 4 and 8 hours. When the numbness wears off you should not feel much if any discomfort provided you follow all advice given.

After the procedure you are required to remain in the clinic for approx 15 min’s before you may go. You should have a lift home and remain sitting with your foot elevated for the rest of the evening. We will arrange a taxi for you if needed.

You will be required to return the day after the procedure to have the toe redressed and be instructed on how to dress the toe. You will be provided with a dressing pack at this appointment.

The toe will take about 3-4 weeks to fully heal and once healed the piece of nail removed will not grow back as to allow it to grow back will likely become ingrown again. Usually only a small section of nail need be removed and once healed looks perfectly normal.
